Hi all,I've been looking into home automation for some time now and I'm quite set on having all wall light switches running data and power over ethernet yet I can't find any switches on the market. Is it really not that popular of a method?I'm looking at rewiring the home as it desperately needs it an PoE seems much better in terms of future expansion: changing/expanding/upgrading etc.My only other option is continue learning electronics with an aim of making my own (currently testing on Arduino with a view of making my own PCB), however right now I'm way out of my depth.Does anyone have an advice on what's on the market or whether I should try and continue?. I'm not sure building code will let you do what you want to do.I doubt you'll find a commercial switch ever made to support poe.
If the switch is controlling a load it already has power, and at that point it is cheaper and more flexible to network them using a wireless protocol (wifi, ZigBee, zwave, etc) or just modulate the data onto the neural (like insteon does).I personally would not recommend designing your own switches if you plan on controlling 120VDC loads with them. Especially as someone that is just starting out. This is the realm where a casual mistake can burn your house down, and without a UL certification on the device, your homeowners insurance might not be too pleased about paying up.If you are just taking about controllers and interacting with the network, that is a little different. You can use off the shelf switches, outlets etc, build your own suite of controllers and sensors and 'glue' then together with the controller.For instance, my lights are all on zwave switches and modules. I have a server in my basement with a zwave USB dongle that lets it be the master controller. I then have a series of other custom sensors I've built that use a different rf network and a corresponding USB dongle on the server.

My devices don't speak zwave, but they don't have to, as my controller does. It handles the logic of 'if sensor 1 sees this, then lights should do that'.This is actually highly flexible as I'm not locked into one protocol (I can pick the best one for the specific application) and all my glue logic is centralized on a single machine that is simple to update.
My switches and sensors don't do anything fancy. They are what they are supposed to be, switches and sensors.
Hi,Perhaps you want to wire the house with Cat5 cable. Then inject 48V DC power into the cable.
Then use the cable to power the lights? I hear that there are office buildings that power lots of desktop electronics that way. No big transformer bricks.
They also power the LED light fixtures in the ceiling. The building super can then turn the lights off and on or even change their color from a central location. She can even be notified when a bulb is inop.I think it's brilliant to wire a house that way.
Of course you'd have an AC system installed for outlets and things but all of the lighting, electronics and other small items could be powered from the DC ethernet cable. The biggies like the air conditioner, sound system, dishwasher are powered by the mains AC.In addition, if you want to collect some solar, the cells are DC so you don't have to convert to AC with the resultant heat losses.I hope it works out and if anybody knows where to find a wall switch that would work with such a system, I'd like to hear about it.
